to senator roy blunt, who told cnn earlier today that it was really amazing, he said, to see the length of this joining me is pentagon correspondent barbara starr and intelligence correspondent suzanne kelly. welcome to you both. barbara, this is really fascinating me. so general petraeus who has been at the center of this huge scandal tomorrow morning will testify at a congressional hearing about benghazi, and your information from a very good source, i think is really, really significant. it's basically, i have been listening to you for the last couple of hours, petraeus basically says he knew the moment this happened that it was a group called answar al sharia and that after that there was a stream of other intelligence saying it may be linked to the video we all knew about but his belief was always that it was this group and they had to rule out the other intelligence before they could officially confirm it. is that right? >> that's pretty close to it, piers. very good source of mine who is directly familiar with what general petraeus plans to try and say on capitol hill tomorrow be

. certainly, i mean, if you listen, for instance, to what ehud barack, the israeli defense minister told cnn yesterday, he essentially said that we want to put an end once and for all to the firing of missiles from gaza into israel, and there's no other way to do that logically than to go in and not only smash hamas's military capabilities, but to smash it as an organization, and, frankly, that's a fairly tall order. that's what they tried to do in 2008, 2009. it didn't really work. in fact, hamas was only more entrenched in power in gaza after that, so i think we're looking ahead to some very difficult days certainly for the people of gaza and for the people of southern israel. >> let's -- more than 400 rockets have been fired into israel from gaza since this operation began, and you have the iron dome defense system intercepting at least a quarter of them. away do you make of the capabilities of both sides? >> certainly it's completely out of balance. i mean, israel is by far the most powerful military power m middle east compared to hamas, which, you know, can only man -- sort of field a

at michael hastings. he was attacked again because of the cnn interview, described as this unhinged person as muddying the sacred waters of journalism. what you really see is their perception there is no national religion in the u.s. the national religion in the u.s. is the military and the journalists are the high priests. >> what does this mean for afghanistan and the cia? you have this military general becoming the head of the cia, now david petraeus -- the have whatever will happen to john allen. what does this mean? >> i'm not sure means anything as far as the policy national security state. i think it will simply be replaced. i'm not sure that general allen is going anywhere. certainly, david petraeus was an important person in the sense he was a revered, almost as a religious figure, that he shielded the cia and other military institutions from any kind of criticism i think -- >> and has been pushing for an expansion of the drone war. >> and president obama, the commander in chief, his boss, is very much on board with the expansion not just of the drone war, the conversion of the ci
